Welcome to inside

Summer 2012

Welcome to "inside", a new publication from London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

After a decade of restructuring that saw most acute care services consolidated in our hospital, we now touch the lives of more people in London and the southwest region than ever before. Given this and all of the changes ahead for health care in Ontario, we felt it was more important than ever to connect in new ways with the communities we serve.

Our goal is to take readers "inside" the hospital to share some of the moving experiences that take place within our walls and celebrate the dedicated people at LHSC, and across the health system, who help make them happen every day. We will also touch on some of the challenges facing hospitals across the province and help inform patients and families about important issues and innovations in providing care.

This new publication, to be published a few times each year, replaces our Annual Report to the Community and various other initiatives so that we can reach many more homes in London and the region. This online version includes additional content, videos, and links to our many programs and services.

In this, our first issue, I invite you to read about the impact that a bell's ring can have in our London Regional Cancer Program, and I challenge you not to be inspired by young Dawson, whose fight with cancer and anorexia nervosa shows the power of teamwork, family and determination. We also turn the lens on our Emergency Departments in order to better understand wait times for emergency care, and I would like to thank our partners from the South West Community Care Access Centre and Middlesex-London Emergency Medical Services for taking part in the informative and engaging dialogue. To help you navigate the sprawling Victoria Hospital campus, which grew again last year with the opening of the new North Tower facility, we've created a parking map which you can print and keep nearby for the next time you visit.

Please be sure to provide us your feedback and let us know what stories or topics you would like to hear more about in future issues.

At LHSC, we are always here when you need us most; likewise, our community has always been there for us. It is because of this support that stories like the ones in this publication are possible.
