LHSC after dark: Caring through the night
It’s midnight at London Health Sciences Centre's (LHSC's) Victoria and University hospitals (VH and UH). Outside, the city of London is blanketed in a calm, pandemic silence. Upon entering, even the hospitals are quiet with the exception of a friendly greeting from those at the COVID-19 screening stations. The clinics are closed for the evening and most outpatient appointments ended hours ago.
And yet, throughout the hospitals, an abundance of activity is happening. The Emergency Departments are abuzz with staff, physicians, patients, and first responders. Diagnostic imaging is running all night and, in the laboratory, thousands of COVID-19 tests are being processed. A surgical team performs a kidney transplant in the operating room while babies are being delivered in the Birthing Centre. Life-saving treatment is being provided in the Intensive Care Unit and Critical Care Trauma Centre, and hundreds of people are being cared for across inpatient units.
In March 2021, we toured our hospitals after hours to capture this activity in a behind-the-scenes look at the exceptional care that’s delivered 24/7. This photographic tribute is only a small glimpse at the outstanding work of our staff, physicians, researchers, and learners as they care through the night.
